Location
Auberge Resorts Collection brings its residential, landscape-first ethos to a private peninsula where the Pacific wraps around three sides of a 1,500-acre enclave. Punta Mita sits at the northern tip of Banderas Bay, sharing latitude with Hawaii but possessing a distinctly Mexican coastal character: gentle sea breezes temper the warmth, pelicans glide low over the water, and the rhythm slows to match the tide. This is not Puerto Vallarta's buzz, ten miles south, but a quieter, more curated version of the Riviera Nayarit.
The peninsula's archaeological roots reach back to 800 AD, when the hilltop site at Careyeros Hill was settled, a reminder that this coastline has drawn people to its shores for over a millennium. Nine and a half miles of beaches and coves, including Litibu Bay, stretch along the property's edges. The Islas Marietas National Park, a protected seabird sanctuary, floats just offshore.
Puerto Vallarta International Airport lies twenty-five kilometres south, an easy transfer by private car along the coastal highway.
Playa La Lancha, just over a kilometre away, offers golden sand and calm morning swells ideal for paddleboarding. Playa Careyeros and Playa Litibu, both within five kilometres, draw fewer crowds and reveal tidal pools at low water. The Islas Marietas National Park, twelve kilometres offshore, is reached by boat in fifteen minutes; the volcanic islands shelter blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and the famous hidden beach, Playa del Amor, carved into a crater and accessible only by swimming through a short tunnel at low tide. The Tail of the Whale golf course, six kilometres inland, extends a dramatic island green reachable only at low tide.
On Sundays, the market in Cruz de Huanacaxtle, ten kilometres south, fills with vendors selling fresh-caught dorado, handwoven textiles, and bags of dried chiles de árbol. Book a boat early in the morning for whale-watching between December and March, when humpbacks migrate through Banderas Bay. Farther afield, Palo Maria Waterfall, thirty-two kilometres into the jungle, rewards the drive with a natural swimming hole shaded by ceiba trees.
Winter months, December through March, bring crystalline light and temperatures hovering around twenty-five degrees, ideal for hiking inland trails or exploring the markets without the weight of humidity. April and May warm steadily, the ocean glassy in the mornings before afternoon breezes pick up.
Summer arrives with the rains in June, transforming the landscape into a verdant tangle of palms and flowering trees; showers typically roll in during the afternoon, clearing by evening. August is the wettest month, but the rain also empties the beaches and cools the air.
By November, the skies clear again, the sun angles lower, and the humpback whales begin their return. The peninsula is comfortable year-round, but the dry season from November through May offers the most consistent conditions for beach days and offshore excursions.
