Cross the Seine to the Left Bank and you reach the UNESCO-inscribed riverbanks, where centuries of Parisian history unfold in stone and iron. Start with an evening walk along the quays when the light turns amber and the city earns its nickname.

Late spring and early autumn deliver Paris at its most forgiving. May temperatures hover near 18°C, the chestnut trees canopy the avenues in green, and café terraces fill without the crush of high summer. September is similar, the light softer and more golden as the city shakes off August's torpor.

July and August bring warmth, occasionally pushing past 24°C, but also the quietest streets as Parisians decamp for the coast.
