Surfers head seven kilometres north to Zippers and Costa Azul, consistent reef breaks that light up with southern hemisphere swells from March through October. The estuary itself, the Estero San José, winds inland and supports more than 270 bird species, accessible via kayak or paddleboard. Start with dawn on the water, when the light turns the Sierra de la Laguna foothills copper and rose.

Spring arrives with warm, arid air. April and May see temperatures climbing toward 28°C, the sky an unbroken dome of blue, the desert scrub blooming after winter rains.

Summer brings monsoon humidity, with August and September afternoons building into brief thunderstorms that leave the air heavy and the landscape vivid green. The heat peaks above 30°C, softened by ocean breezes but rarely comfortable for midday exertion.

Winter, from December through February, offers the gentlest weather: daytime warmth in the mid-twenties, cool evenings, and virtually no rain. This is peak season, when the Pacific gray whales pass offshore and the light takes on a crystalline quality that makes every vista sharp-edged and inviting.
