Location
Four Seasons has built a reputation on anticipatory service and consistent quality across more than 120 properties worldwide, each reflecting its locale through architecture, cuisine, and cultural programming while maintaining the brand's signature personalised attention. At Wailea, that philosophy unfolds along a sheltered stretch of Maui's southwestern coast, where the volcanic slopes of Haleakalā meet the Pacific in a series of crescent beaches and lava-rock headlands.
Wailea itself was carved from ranchland in 1971, a planned resort community that replaced cattle pastures with championship golf courses and oceanfront hotels. The landscape still carries the dry, sun-scorched character of old Maui, golden grasses giving way to black basalt and the constant shimmer of heat off the water. Trade winds temper the warmth, and the sky holds that particular Hawaiian clarity, a deep blue punctuated by the occasional passing squall over the channel islands.
Kahului International Airport sits 24 kilometres north along the coast road, a straightforward drive through former sugarcane country and the isthmus between Maui's two volcanic massifs. The surrounding neighbourhood is walkable in the resort sense: beach paths connect adjacent properties, golf courses roll inland, and the Wailea Beach Walk threads past palm groves and tidepools.
Wailea Beach lies just 300 metres from the property, a gentle arc of golden sand sheltered by headlands on either side. Polo Beach, half a kilometre south, draws fewer crowds and offers better snorkelling along its rocky margins. For more solitude, follow the coastal trail to Palauea Beach, where green sea turtles rest in the shallows and the sand stretches uninterrupted toward Makena. Wailea's three golf courses, the Blue, Emerald, and Gold, all lie within two kilometres, each carved into the arid slopes with ocean views and volcanic stone bunkers.
Venture eight kilometres southwest into 'Āhihi-Kīna'u Natural Area Reserve, where a jagged lava flow from 1790 meets the sea in tide pools and submerged caves. The reserve protects some of Maui's most pristine coral reef. Book a dive at Shark Condos or Flying Sea Cliffs, both seven kilometres offshore, where lava tubes and drop-offs harbour rays, octopus, and the occasional reef shark. For a shift in elevation, drive 18 kilometres upcountry to MauiWine's tasting room on the slopes of Haleakalā, where pineapple wines and estate-grown varietals reflect Maui's volcanic terroir.
Summer arrives dry and settled, with temperatures climbing into the low thirties and rainfall nearly vanishing between June and September. The air shimmers with heat, but trade winds keep the coast comfortable, and the water reaches its warmest, ideal for long swims and reef snorkelling.
Winter brings slightly cooler temperatures, mid-twenties during the day, and the year's heaviest rain, though storms tend to pass quickly. This is whale season: humpbacks arrive in the channel between December and April, and you can often spot them breaching from the shoreline.
Spring and autumn hold the year's most balanced weather, warm but not sweltering, with minimal rain and calm seas. May and October see some of the clearest water and lightest winds, perfect for diving and exploring the coastline without the summer crowds.
