Location
Four Seasons properties worldwide balance the brand's hallmark personalised service with deep local character, and nowhere is this more evident than on Lana'i, Hawaii's smallest publicly accessible island. Just 18 miles across at its widest point, this former pineapple plantation feels worlds away from the crowds of Maui and Oahu. The property sits above Hulopo'e Bay on Lana'i's southeastern coast, where ironwood forests meet cobalt Pacific waters.
Lanai City, the island's only town, clusters around a few quiet streets lined with tin-roofed plantation houses and Norfolk pines, built during the island's agricultural heyday. The resort anchors Manele Bay, where spinner dolphins often appear in the early morning light and Cook pines shadow the clifftops. This is an island where you'll encounter more axis deer than tourists, where red dirt roads lead to petroglyphs and shipwrecks, and where the pace follows the tide rather than the clock.
Lanai Airport sits eight kilometres north, with short flights connecting to Honolulu and Maui; many guests arrive via the hourly ferry from Lahaina Harbor, a 26-kilometre crossing that takes less than an hour.
Hulopo'e Beach lies 400 metres from the property, a marine preserve where the snorkeling rivals anywhere in Hawaii. Humuhumunukunukuapua'a (the state fish, a triggerfish with an absurdly long name) dart through the coral heads, and green sea turtles graze on the reef. The Challenge at Manele, designed by Jack Nicklaus, plays along the coastal cliffs just over a kilometre away, with signature holes perched above crashing surf. Book a tee time for the back nine, where the Pacific stretches uninterrupted to the horizon. Manele Harbor, an easy walk from the resort, serves as the departure point for snorkel charters to the crescent-shaped Sweetheart Rock and dolphin-watching expeditions.
Inland, follow the Munro Trail through cloud forest to the island's 1,026-metre summit, where views span five islands on clear mornings. Polihua Beach on the north shore, 24 kilometres distant via rutted red roads, remains wild and often empty, backed by dunes and frequented by monk seals. Start your day before the wind picks up, when the water clarity peaks and the light turns the cliffs amber.
Summer arrives dry and warm, with July and August pushing past 28°C under cloudless skies. The trade winds temper the heat, keeping the air comfortable even at midday. Ocean conditions turn glassy, ideal for snorkeling Hulopo'e Bay's reefs. Winter brings modest rainfall, concentrated in December through February, though even these months rarely see prolonged storms. Mornings often break clear before afternoon clouds gather over the island's central ridge.
Water temperatures hover around 24°C year-round, warm enough for extended swimming without a wetsuit. Spring and autumn offer the finest conditions: May through October delivers the driest weather and calmest seas, while November through April sees occasional swells that energise the coastline and green the upland forests.
The shoulder months of April and November strike the balance, with warm days, minimal rain, and fewer guests.
